Personal Information
Fast becoming one of chuckwagon racing’s elite drivers, 2017 was John’s finest season to date. He won two show championships at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship and Battle of the North, en route to runner-up finish to the World Chuckwagon Championship. His horse "DANCER" was named to both the Calgary Stampede and WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence as the Champion Right Leader, and he captured the WPCA Clean Drive Award after racing penalty free over the 40 race days that comprised the 9 stops on the 2017 WPCA Pro Tour. 2017 also saw John post 20 top ten runs, including 6 first place runs and 5 runs that also placed inside the top five. In addition to his two wins, John placed in the top ten overall at four other show championships in 2017. In less than 10 years on the WPCA Pro Tour, John has certainly made his mark with 4 show championship wins, three horses named to Calgary Stampede Equine Outfit of Excellence, two horses name to the WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence, the WPCA Clean Drive Award in 2017 and he received the Herman Flad Memorial Award for the WPCA’s Most Improved Driver in 2011. John’s chuckwagon career began in 2009 on the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) circuit before making the move up to the WPCA in 2010. Prior to driving chuckwagons, John competed as a rodeo cowboy for over 20 years in Saddle Bronc Riding and Steer Wrestling, winning overall Saddle Bronc Championships in the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Lakeland Rodeo Association, and the Canadian Cowboys Association, and a year end All Around Championship in the Canadian Cowboys Association as well. Originally from Czar, Alberta, John's father Wordon Walters raced thoroughbred chuckwagons, chariots and pony wagons for many years starting in the late 1940's, and his brother Ken Walters is a current driver on the CPCA circuit. John is a rancher and is the owner of John Walters Fencing - a custom fencing business in the off season - and enjoys hockey, hunting and being with horses. John and his wife Bonnie have six children, twelve grandchildren and make their home in Delburne, Alberta.
