Personal Information
The eldest member of one of chuckwagon racing’s prominent racing families, 2016 saw Gary win his first show since joining the WPCA when he captured the Strathmore Stampede and placed a career best in the World Standings finishing as runner-up to the World Chuckwagon Championship. He was a semi-finalist at the Calgary Stampede for the fifth consecutive year, and for the second consecutive year he had a horse named to the WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence when "TOMMY" was named the WPCA’s Champion Right Wheeler. Gary posted 22 top ten runs in 2016, including 4 first place runs and 8 other runs that also placed inside the top five. His 4 first place runs were tied for the most among WPCA drivers in 2016. In addition to his win in Strathmore, a runner-up at the Battle of the Rockies, a birth in the semi-final round at the Ponoka Stampede and top ten overall finishes at seven shows were among Gary’s highlights for 2016. Gary has twice qualified for GMC Rangeland Derby championship final heat, has had two horses named to the Calgary Stampede's Equine Outfit of Excellence, two horses named to WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence and has placed inside the top ten in the World Standings for the fourth time in just five seasons on the WPCA Pro Tour. Prior to joining the WPCA, Gary had an extremely successful career on the CPCA circuit where he was the 2010 CPCA Champion driver, was the CPCA’s High Point Driver three times in four years, and won 13 CPCA show championships in a 5 year stretch. Gary won the CPCA’s Bruce Bremner Award for the Most Consistent Barreling Outfit in 2010, received the CPCA's Chuckwagon Family of the Year Award in 2005, and qualified for the winner–take–all final for the CPCA Championship in six consecutive years, finishing no worse than 3rd overall in the same time period. Gary is a second generation wagon man whose father Art Gorst competed at the Stampede in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Gary and his wife Janice have three children - fellow drivers Logan and Dustin Gorst, and daughter Jenalee, and make their home in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.
