Kurt Bensmiller Wins Third World Championship; Dayton Sutherland Captures First Career Title At The 2018 Battle Of The Rockies

It was a big day in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta as the 2018 season wrapped up Sunday afternoon. There was a lot on the line on day 4 of the Battle of the Rockies. Two world champions would be declared, as well as the 2018 Battle of the Rockies Championship would all be determined in a pressure packed Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain House.

Kurt Bensmiller won his third career World Chuckwagon Championship by 94.5 points over Vern Nolin. Former World Champion Kirk Sutherland was third, Evan Salmond was fourth and 4-time World Champion Jason Glass placed fifth. Rory Gervais captured his first career World Outriding title as well.

In the chase for the season ending Battle of the Rockies championship, Dayton Sutherland, driving the York Realty outfit, and outriders Casey Knight and Rory Gervais, emerged as champions of the 2018 Battle of the Rockies after posting the best 4-day aggregate time of 5:03.12. That put him 2.43 seconds in front of runner-up Doug Irvine, followed closely by Logan Gorst. Kurt Bensmiller was fourth and Gary Gorst completed the top five overall in the season ending event. It’s the first career show win for Dayton Sutherland as a chuckwagon driver.

On the day, Doug Irvine was tops with a 1:15.73, from barrel number 1 in the seventh heat. Jason Glass was second, with Vern Nolin, Kelly Morin and Troy Flad rounding out the top five on the afternoon.

Equine outfit of Excellence winners included “DANCER” of John Walter’s outfit on Right Lead for the second consecutive year, “GRATITAT” of Kurt Bensmiller’s outfit on Left Lead, “COWBOY” of Evan Salmond’s outfit on Right Wheel, “BUTCH” of Mike Vigen’s outfit on Left Wheel, and “ED” of Rick Fraser/Jason Glass’ outfit and “UNQUIET” of Gary Gorst’s outfit were the champion Outriding Horses.
