Vern Nolin - Second Consecutive First Place Run On Night 7 In Calgary

It was a hot dry day 7 of the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby as drivers were bringing all they had to give themselves an opportunity to make the top eight and a chance at Semi-Final Saturday. For the second consecutive night, Vern Nolin, driving the Dentons Canada LLP outfit, had the fast time with a run of 1:11.20.

Coming off barrel number 2 in heat number 6, Nolin won the day money by 17 one-hundredths of a second over Roger Moore who placed second, with Mike Vigen, Dallas Dyck and Rick Fraser making up the top five times on the night.

A two-second penalty cost Chanse Vigen on the night and now Kurt Bensmiller takes over the lead in the overall aggregate with a 6 run aggregate time of 7:22.70. Vigen falls into second place overall, while Logan Gorst, Obrey Motowylo, Troy Dorchester, Evan Salmond, Chad Harden and Kirk Sutherland make up the top eight after six runs. Kelly Sutherland, who is competing in his final GMC Rangeland Derby sits ninth and Vern Nolin jumps back up and is in 10th place overall.

The Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy, symbolic of the Calgary Stampede aggregate winner will now be declared after 7 nights on Friday, July 14, and the top 8 in the aggregate on that day will go into “Semi Final Saturday.” The top 4 times from the two semi-final heats on semi on Saturday on July 15 will go into the winner-take-all championship final heat. The winner of the final heat will be declared the 2017 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Champion.
