John Walters - Fast Run On A Slower Track On Night 5 In Calgary

After inclement weather cancelled the races for day number 4 and will shorten the Rangeland Derby to 9 days of running, some fine racing was seen on day 5 of the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby. Racetrack conditions were considerably slower, but John Walters, driving The Shaw GMC Chevrolet Buick outfit, emerged as the day money winner after posting the top time of the night with a 1:16.18.
Coming off barrel number 4 in heat number 3, Waters won the day money by one-tenth of a second over two-time GMC Rangeland Derby Champion Kurt Bensmiller who placed second for the night. Rick Fraser and Chanse Vigen split 3rd and 4th on the night, with Codey McCurrach rounding out the fastest five times on the night.
Chanse Vigen continues to lead the overall aggregate with a 4 run aggregate time of 4:54.20. He is followed closely by Kurt Bensmiller with Colt Cosgrave, Rick Fraser, Troy Dorchester, Kirk Sutherland, John Walters and Chad Harden making out the top eight after four runs. Evan Salmond and Logan Gorst are on the outside looking in, sitting in 9th and 10th place respectively.
The Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy, symbolic of the Calgary Stampede aggregate winner will be declared after 8 nights on Friday, July 14, and the top 8 in the aggregate on that day will go into “Semi Final Saturday.” The top 4 times from the two semi-final heats on semi on Saturday on July 15 will go into the winner-take-all championship final heat. The winner of the final heat will be declared the 2017 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Champion.
