Kirk Sutherland is a veteran driver entering his 5th decade as a competitor. In 2009, Kirk posted 23 top ten runs, including one first place run at Richard Cosgrave Memorial Badlands Dinosaur Derby and 7 runs that cracked the top 5. He placed in the top 10 overall at 6 show championships including top 5 overall finishes at the Grand Prairie Stompede and the Medicine Hat Stampede being his best of the year. Kirk has won 6 show championships in his career at the North American Chuckwagon Championship, the Hand Hills Stampede, Kamloops Rangeland Derby, Edmonton's Chuckwagon Derby and has twice captured the Battle of the North in Dawson Creek, B.C. Kirk was the WPCA Most Improved Outfit award winner in 1984. His win at the 2006 Battle of the North came 30 years after he won his first ever show championship there in 1976. He has twice qualified for the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby's sudden death championship final heat in 1987 and 2008. Both years he qualified along with his brother Kelly, and they are the first and only brother combination to qualify for the Calgary Stampede’s sudden death final in the same year. Kirk and Kelly are one of 4 brother combinations that compete on the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour. Kirk and his wife Kathy have four children - Mitch, Traci, Misty, and Ashley.
