Personal Information
Mark Sutherland is coming off his finest year as a chuckwagon driver placing a career best 8th place in the World Standings. 2009 saw Mark posted 11 top ten runs including 1 first place runs and 5 runs that cracked the top five. He had top ten overall finishes at 6 show championships, and made his first trip to the sudden death championship final heats at both the Ponoka Stampede and the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby. He won the Calgary Stampede's Safe Drive Award for the Least Penalized Driver for the 2nd time in his career, and won the 2009 WPCA Clean Drive Award becoming just the 2nd driver to win both the Calgary Stampede and WPCA clean drive awards in a single year. Mark won the Calgary Stampede's Orville Strandquist Award for the top Rookie Driver in 1996, pioneered the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology as a tool for chuckwagon training, and has participated annually in EnCana’s WPCA/4-H Mentorship Program since 2007. Mark is a graduate of the University of Alberta, and is a second-generation chuckwagon driver whose father is the legendary Kelly Sutherland. Mark works for the EnCana Corporation in the off-season. Mark enjoys computers, hockey, fishing, and training horses when he is not racing chuckwagons. A native of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Mark and his wife Dina and their two children - Kiera and Dayton, now make their home near Okotoks, Alberta.
